In 2005, the US government implemented new legislation to regulate International Marriage Brokers (IMB) and the associated industries. The result was the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act (IMBRA) of 2005; IMBRA requires three new steps before an agency can connect a foreign citizen with a US Citizen/Resident Alien, in addition to further fiancé and tourist visa application ramifications for anyone looking to settle in the US. The new IMBRA provisions include:

A National Sex Offender Public Registry inquiry
Collection of Client Background History provided to foreign women
Providing a translated brochure advising foreign women of US domestic violence rights
